Sanjay Roy, who raped and murdered a doctor at Kolkata's R.G. Kar Medical College Hospital, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. He has also been fined Rs 50,000. The verdict was given by the Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah, Kolkata. The court pointed out that the case was the rarest of rare. The court also said that the safety of girls is the responsibility of the state.
The court said that the government should pay Rs 17 lakh as compensation to the girl's family. However, the doctor's family said that they did not want compensation. While reading the verdict, the court said that the crime against the accused has been proven beyond doubt. The accused told the court that he did not commit the crime and was innocent. Before pronouncing the verdict, the court had heard what the accused Sanjay Roy had to say. Only after this did it become clear that the crime was proven.
Sanjay Roy was convicted last Friday. The murder of a female doctor in Kolkata was a shocking incident in the country. Following this incident, widespread protests by doctors took place in the country.
The trainee doctor was found murdered in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, 2024. The accused, Sanjay Roy, was in the hospital premises at 11 pm that day. The accused, who was drunk at that time, later went out and drank again. He then entered the hospital building at 4 am. After 40 minutes, it was clear from the CCTV footage that he was leaving through the emergency department. The accused sexually assaulted the female doctor who was sleeping in the seminar hall and strangled her to death when she resisted.
Protests erupted in the state and the entire country when it was discovered that the female doctor was killed after being raped. Sanjay Roy was arrested by the police on August 10.
The accused was arrested during an investigation focused on the part of the Bluetooth earphone found near the doctor's body and the CCTV footage of the hospital building. As the protests intensified, the court later handed over the case to the CBI. The CBI also found that only Sanjay Roy was involved in the crime. Blood samples of the female doctor were found on the clothes and shoes of the accused and this was confirmed through DNA testing.
Meanwhile, the CBI also arrested the medical college principal Sandeep Ghosh and police officer Abhijit Mondal for trying to destroy evidence and delaying the investigation.
The CBI team filed a chargesheet against the accused Sanjay Roy on November 4, 2024. The trial of the case began on November 11. The entire trial was held in a closed courtroom. The trial proceedings were also recorded on camera.
