A five-year-old girl died after being treated for amoebic encephalitis. Fatwa, a native of Malappuram Munniyoor, died. The child was under ventilator treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for a week. Malappuram is suspected to have contracted the virus from Kadalundi river.
The girl had gone to bathe in the dried-up Kadulundi river near her house in summer. Five days later, the boy was admitted to a nearby private hospital with severe headache and fever, but as his illness worsened, he was shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Amoebic encephalitis was confirmed when the fluid from the spinal cord was examined.
