The Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to change the official name of the state from 'Kerala' to 'Kerala'. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan moved a resolution under Rule 118 requesting the central government to change it to 'Kerala'. The assembly asked the central government to take immediate steps to amend the name.
The name of our state is Kerala in Malayalam language. States were formed on the basis of language on 1 November 1956. Kerala Birth Day is also November 1. The need to form a united Kerala for the Malayalam speaking communities has been strongly emerging since the time of the national freedom struggle. But the name of our state is written as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution. This Assembly unanimously requests the Union Government to take immediate steps to amend it as Kerala under Article 3 of the Constitution. This House also requests that our country be changed to the name of 'Kerala' in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
